Speaking Engagements

Kelley was a featured guest on The Indy Author Podcast hosted by Matty Dalrymple, discusses the legal considerations for use of images for book covers and promotional material, including use of free sites like Unsplash. She discusses the use of music and musical references—a topic of particular interest to me based on an Ann Kinnear Suspense Short I just wrote—and what Creative Commons and public domain material is, and the opportunities it opens for indy authors.

Recent Feedback About Kelley’s Presentations

“Thank you for such an insightful informative presentation to PART: Professional Appraisers Round Table on intellectual property.  Kelley covered aspects of Intellectual Property appraisers need to be aware of,  along with determining if intellectual property is an issue to be addressed in estate planning and appraisal reports.  Wonderfully done presentation. Kelley explained the topics clearly and concise. Highly recommend Kelley for speaking opportunities.”

suggested topics

Kelley loves to give educational seminars to help non-lawyers understand the law better.  But she has a special affinity to speaking with writers, publishers and editors at writing conferences. Most of her presentations deal with literary law, or the crossover between intellectual property and estate planning/estate administration. Topics that she speaks on include:

  • Estate Planning – what is estate planning, who needs an estate plan, and what to do once you have one
  • Intellectual Property – overview of copyright and/or trademark law, as well as how to protect your intellectual property (IP) without infringing on others
  • Intersection of Intellectual Property and Estate Planning – how these areas overlap, and how intellectual property (IP) assets are different from other types of property
  • Literary Law Basics – overview and best strategies for five areas of law authors are most likely to encounter (copyright, trademark, right of privacy, defamation and contract law)
  • Publishing Contracts – tips for negotiating, as well as what to look for (and look out for) in a publishing contract
